Some simple joys again
what's up
I finally read the Anxious Generation and it’s all it seems. A must read for anyone… young person, parents, etc. Instead of me recapping the highlights, do yourself a favor and read the book itself or at least the blog by the author.
For the last few months I’ve confined social media best I can to while at work in an hour limit a day and at home only to check important messages for a few minutes on my laptop (still can get distracted but not so much). Last week I went over my limits to work on some things and that night brought the work phone home because I’d have my friend re configure the limits the next day… what harm would one evening of doom scrolling do?!
A lot. I stayed up way too late, couldn't fall asleep as well as I have been able to, and woke up anxious and exhausted. It’s a mind killer.
I binged the new season of Top Chef sans the finale episodes coming out in the next few weeks and it’s great to contrast the old seasons where drama is exasperated to no end and contestants are at each other’s throats. Whereas in this newest season, the host (a past season winner) shed tears when she had to eliminate beloved chefs and fellow contestants share kindred friendships even though they’re all after the same title. It’s the kind of community I want to have with fellows in my industry, whether in my arena of influence or otherwise. We’re all trying to build the same thing. Maybe there was a similar sense of community in older seasons that was masked by wanting better reality tv. Fair. But there were some ugly attitudes.
Made another syrup out of a stout! It’s glorious, delicious. The drink itself is called “You’re driving home from the lake and your parents decide to get Mexican from the strip mall plaza next to food lion”
Is it a long name? Yeah. But the vibe it evokes is perfect. You’re still a little soggy in the back seat. Sand stubbornly stuck to your calves. Then there’s churros. Yum.
I strolled through the newish Barnes and Noble that is nearest to me and the layout of the store is not traditional aisles of shelves and whatever the maze like flow would be called… and I love it.
The local state park will see too much of me this summer for reading and resting with the sun.
